…as Army nabs two suspected perpetrators

The Nigerian Army has provided an update on the recent incident at Banex Plaza, Abuja, where unidentified hoodlums attacked Nigerian Army (NA) personnel on Saturday, May 18, 2024, leading to the closure of the Plaza on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
Giving an update on the incident, the Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu , on Monday said, a high-level meeting was convened in the Office of the National Security Adviser, including representatives from various security agencies, the leadership of Banex Plaza, and the National Chairman of the Mobile Phone Traders Association hence the decision was taken to reopen the market.
He said, the aim of the meeting was to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and ensure the continued security of the Federal Capital Territory.
He clarified that, two suspected attackers have already been arrested and handed over to the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police for further action.
General Nwachukwu averred that the Nigerian Army will thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the presence of its personnel at the plaza and the subsequent attack.
Speaking on the updates of the meeting at the office of the National Security Adviser, the Army Spokesperson said the meeting resolved that Banex plaza should be openned immediately, while shop C93 should be locked up forthwith. He added that the owners of the shop who orchestrated the mob attack on the soldiers are to be arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Police for further actions.
The statement further urges the public to always exercise caution and restraint when interacting with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform.
“There are established channels for reporting grievances or misconduct by personnel to the appropriate authorities, and it is imperative that these channels are utilized to maintain order and respect for those who serve and protect our nation.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to work diligently to prevent such incidents in the future.” he added.
