Contrary to recent reports, the Nigerian Army has clarified that it is not involved in the ongoing Kano emirate tussle, nor is it enforcing any court orders related to the matter.
In a statement released on May 26, 2024, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that the Army’s primary concern is maintaining peace and security in the state.
Recall that the Kano state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association has berated the Nigerian Army for deploying troops to enforce a court order in the ongoing Kano emirate tussle as published by Premium Times dated 26 May 2024.
The Army has taken proactive measures to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order, which could be exploited by adversarial groups. However, it is not actively involved in the emirate tussle and will only intervene if the situation becomes overwhelming for the police to handle.
“The issue of paramount concern to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies is the prevention of breakdown of law and order in the state, which could be taken advantage of by adversarial non-state actors.
“The military would imminently intervene when it becomes apparent that the intensity of the security situation becomes overwhelming for the police,” he stated.
The Army is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to act swiftly if necessary to prevent any escalation that could threaten the security of the state and the region. By setting the record straight, the Army aims to alleviate any misconceptions and reassure the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Kano state.
“All the Army is doing at this stage is to monitor the situation as it unfolds and be on standby in the event of any escalation that could threaten the security of the state and the region in general,” the statement added.
