The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Thursday declined to engage in a war of words with Zamfara State Governor, Mr Dauda Lawal, over his recent remarks on the military’s efforts in combating banditry in the State. The DHQ, instead emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in winning the war against banditry, stating that victory requires a united front.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made this known during a bi-weekly media briefing in Abuja and said without the cooperation of the Governor and the people of Zamfara State, the military’s efforts would be futile. General Buba emphasised that “winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible.”
“The military will not join issues with the Governor, rather we choose the part of cooperation over conflict with the state Governor and look forward to constructively engaging with him on these matters.
“Overall, the military will continue to work tirelessly to restore safety and security across our nation. Certainly, there is still a lot of fighting to do, to guarantee the safety of our homeland.
“Citizens must clearly understand the reason we are fighting this war. They must understand that the terrorists will not stop until they are stopped. Additionally, the lifeline of the terrorist groups is the people. Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible,” he emphasised.
General Buba reiterated the commitment of the military to restoring peace and security in the region, emphasizing that “together, we can achieve more”.
He said, that despite the loss of nine personnel in June, troops have neutralized 197 terrorists, arrested 310 suspects, and rescued 251 kidnapped hostages. The military has also recovered 180 assorted weapons, and 5,123 ammunition, and destroyed terrorist infrastructure.
He emphasized its willingness to engage with the Zamfara State Governor and dismissed allegations of wrongdoing, urging the citizens to understand the importance of supporting the war against terror, as the enemy’s lifeline depends on the people.
Recall that recently, the Zamfara Governor, Dauda Lawal, alleged on TV that the military is not helping in the fight against banditry, accusing them of inaction and complicity. In contrast, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, later announced the arrest of politicians and traditional rulers implicated in banditry activities, hinting at collusion with the criminals, Enugu Reporters gathered.
