The Defence Headquarters, Tuesday said the recent terrorists bomb attacks in Gworza, Borno State, was the terrorists’ desperate attempt to dispel reports of their decline, to prove a point and create panic to the general public.

Major General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations explained this in a statement said the bomb attack by terrorists, killing 20 and injuring 52, was their act of terror only serves to reinforce their weakness, as troops remain undeterred in their pursuit of peace.

He said, the coordinated attacks, which occurred on Saturday, 29 June 2024, involved multiple female suicide bombers, disguising themselves as beggars, targeting a wedding reception and troops enforcing a curfew.

General Buba noted that the first attack took place at 1500hrs when a disguised female suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a wedding reception on Mararaba Hausari Street. While troops were stabilizing the situation and evacuating casualties, a second explosion occurred nearby at 1700hrs.
Unfortunately, the third explosion targeted troops enforcing a curfew, resulting in the loss of one soldier and two hybrid forces members.

He further said, a fourth potential attack was averted when the suspect detonated the bomb prematurely, becoming the only casualty.
Regrettably, 20 lives were lost, and 52 individuals sustained various injuries, currently receiving treatment.

General Buba maintained that these despicable acts are a response to recent military successes, which have decapitated terrorist leadership, depleted resources, and reduced their influence.
The terrorist’s goal is to create panic and project strength to counter their weakness.

He urged the citizens to remain vigilant, support the Armed Forces, and stand united against terrorism.

He , therefore, condemned the attacks, noting that the Armed Forces views every life lost as a tragedy and extend condolences to the families of the victims and commiserate with those undergoing healing and recovery from the unfortunate incidents.

He further reiterated that troops will relentlessly pursue and eliminate the perpetrators, ensuring a secure and peaceful future for all.
