In a landmark display of military cooperation and sportsmanship, 54 African countries will gather for the 2nd Africa Military Games Abuja (AMGA) 2024, a multi-sporting event aimed at enhancing military cooperation and security across the continent.
Air Vice Marshal AT Marquis, Director of Sport at the Defence Headquarters, who is also the Local Organizing Committee Chairman AMGA 2024, disclosed this today during a press conference in Abuja.

He said the event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” will feature 19 sports, including basketball, football, boxing, table tennis, and golf, with both male and female military athletes participating.
He announced that the event would take place from November 5 to 18, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The prestigious event, hosted by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and patronized by the Minister of Defence, has received the full support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will serves as the grand patron of the OSMA with all the service chiefs serving as the co-host.

Air Vice Marshal Marquis highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it will enhance tourist activities, and health benefits, boost economic activities, and create jobs for the hosting nation. According to him, the forthcoming event will also promote Nigerian culture, demonstrate strong unity and other positive things about the host country.
In his brief remarks, Major General Abdullahi Maikano, President of OSMA, emphasized that the event aims to cement cooperation among African militaries and enhance regional security.
He said despite initial doubts, Nigeria was awarded the hosting rights due to its capabilities, and OSMA is hopeful that all African nations, including Burkina Faso , Sudan and Chad, will participate actively in the sporting events.
Enugu Reporters reports that the games promise to bring numerous benefits to Nigeria, including tourism, health benefits, job creation, showcase divers cultural background and economic growth. A raffle draw with exciting prizes, including cars, will also be held during the event.
OSMA officials will inspect facilities in Nigeria in September to ensure a smooth and successful event. With its rich legacy and commitment to peace, the Africa Military Games are poised to make history in Abuja.
