NAF Chief urges media to join forces against fake news menace

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has called on reputable media outlets to take a proactive stance against the spread of misinformation and fake news in Nigeria. Air Marshal Abubakar stated this during a meeting with the Group Chief Executive Officer of TVC Communications, Mrs. Victoria Abiola Ajayi, at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters on Friday.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Information NAF Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet in a statement said, the CAS emphasized the need for accurate and responsible reporting, particularly on sensitive issues with national security implications.

He highlighted the crucial role credible media outlets like TVC play in combating misinformation and disinformation, and urged them to champion the vetting of online media platforms to mitigate their effect in spreading fake news.
The CAS also emphasized the importance of upholding journalistic principles of fairness, objectivity, and impartiality.

Air Marshal Abubakar commended TVC’s significant contributions to public awareness and national development, particularly in setting the agenda, creating awareness, and educating the public on NAF’s activities. He stressed the importance of the partnership between the NAF and the media in showcasing the military’s efforts in safeguarding lives and properties, and fostering transparency and trust among Nigerians.

The CAS reiterated the NAF’s commitment to maintaining a transparent, cordial, and collaborative relationship with TVC and other media outlets, with the shared goal of effectively communicating the NAF’s efforts and achievements to the Nigerian public.

Mrs. Ajayi, accompanied by the Director of Current Affairs, Mr. Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, and Manager Commercials, Mr. Emeka Chukwuma, emphasized the need for enhanced partnership between TVC and the NAF to combat misinformation and keep the public informed about NAF’s activities.
