In a heroic display of bravery and selflessness, the Nigerian Navy successfully rescued 59 persons from drowning in turbulent waters near the Okpobo River entrance on July 30, 2024.
Director of Information Nigerian Navy Commodore Adams Aliu disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
He however said the operation came at a great cost, as Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer, lost his life during the rescue mission.
He noted that the Nigerian Navy received a distress call from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited, which was at risk of sinking due to the turbulent waters.
In response, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BONNY deployed a rescue team led by Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, comprising 10 armed personnel in 2 Interceptor Boats.
Despite the challenging conditions, the rescue team persevered, and additional reinforcements were deployed, including 3 boats, Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy Helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter. After a gruelling 10-hour operation, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued.
Tragically, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza fell overboard during the rescue operation and lost his life.
The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of this brave officer, who risked his life to save others. His dedication and sacrifice will be forever remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire the Nigerian Navy personnel.
Enugu Reporters noted that the Nigerian Navy’s daring rescue operation demonstrates its unwavering commitment to protecting human life and ensuring the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
