In a significant boost to the nation’s security, the Nigerian military has recorded major successes in its ongoing operations against terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements across the country in the past week.
Briefing newsmen on Thursday Major General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations, said the military within the period under review has made significant gains in its operations, particularly in the North West, South South, and South East regions.
In the North West, troops of Operation WHIRL PUNCH have been relentless in their pursuit of terrorists and kidnappers. On November 17 and 18, 2024, troops intercepted and arrested four violent extremists/kidnappers in Lokoja and Borgu LGAs of Kogi and Niger States, as well as the Bwari Area Council of FCT Abuja.
He said troops also recovered two Dane guns, one locally made pistol, 34 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, and one fragmental jacket.
In a separate operation, troops raided violent extremists/kidnappers hideouts in Bassa and Ajaokuta LGAs of Kogi State, arresting six extremists, including one kidnapper identified as Mal Baushe.
In the South-South, he noted that troops of Operation DELTA SAFE have been working tirelessly to curb the menace of oil theft. The troops have destroyed several illegal refining sites and recovered stolen products.
According to him, on November 12 and 13, 2024, troops engaged in firefights with violent extremists/pirates and pipeline vandals in Degema and Ahoada West LGAs of Rivers State, arresting four extremists and recovering two AK47 rifles, 16 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, one magazine, two walkie-talkies, two outboard engines, and one speedboat.
In the South East, General Buba noted that troops of Operation UDO KA have been making significant strides in their operations against IPOB/ESN terrorists and collaborators.
The Director said, that on November 11, 2024, troops responded to distress calls on activities of violent extremists/IPOB/ESN terrorists in Orumba South and Okigwe LGAs of Anambra and Imo States, rescuing one kidnapped personnel and recovering one AK47 rifle, one pump action gun, 45 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 14 cartridges, and three fabricated hand grenades.
He explained that between November 10 and 17, 2024, troops made contact with IPOB/ESN terrorists in Orumba South and Ihiala LGAs of Anambra State, as well as Umunneochi and Ohaozara LGAs of Abia and Ebonyi States, neutralizing four terrorists and arresting six collaborators.
He averred that the military’s successes in these operations are a testament to the effectiveness of the nation’s security forces in combating terrorism and other forms of criminality.
