The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam has emphasized the crucial role of military competences in achieving operational successes.
He stated this during the combined West African Social Activities (WASA) for the year 2024, held at the Effurum Barracks in Warri, Delta State.
Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma 6 Division’s Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations,in a statement on Sunday said the event brought together officers and men of the 63 Brigade and 3 Battalion, as well as other sister services and security agencies.
Major General Abdussalam, who was the Special Guest of Honour, highlighted the significant gains recorded by the 6 Division against illegal bunkering and economic saboteurs, citing the improved oil production and relative peace in the Niger Delta Region (NDR) as evidence of the division’s effectiveness.



He attributed these successes to the dogged professionalism and military competences of the troops, stressing that these qualities are essential for maintaining the trajectory of improved oil production for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The GOC commended the Commander of the 63 Brigade, Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, and his officers and men for their remarkable performance and successes, which he said are a testament to the division’s support and backing. He stressed that WASA was avenue where troops showcase different and colourful cultural displays to improve their strength and and unity.
He also appreciated the presence of other sister services and security agencies, noting that their participation demonstrates the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, to “Consolidate the Transformation of the Nigerian Army Towards Bequeathing a Well-Motivated and Combat-Ready Force that can Effectively Discharge its Constitutional Responsibilities within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment.“
In his welcome remarks, the Commander 63 Brigade , Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu appreciated the GOC for his timely and uncommon support to the Brigade. He acknowledged that the success made in the Brigade are testaments of the Division’s unwavering support and backing.


In a related development, the Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has commended the role of the military in maintaining peace and security in the NDR and assured that the government would continue to encourage peaceful co-existence in the state. He thanked the Nigerian Army for the sacrifices for the peace and security of the Niger Delta region
The event featured a range of exciting activities, including colourful dances, calisthenics displays, and a tug of war, as well as the inspection of local cuisines and the beating of retreat.
Major highlights of the ceremony were the commissioning of a museum and the presentation of awards to deserving personnel.
