In a significant display of cooperation and commitment to transparency, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State on Tuesday received a fact-finding team from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at the Government House in Gusau.
This was disclosed to newsmen by the Director Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa.
According to him, the team, led by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, was dispatched by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, to investigate the reported civilian casualties resulting from a recent NAF airstrike in the State.
Recall that on January 11, 2025, the Nigerian Air Force conducted airstrikes against bandits in Zamfara State, and subsequent reports suggested that these operations had regrettably led to civilian casualties.
To maintain its integrity the NAF Chief deployed a fact-finding team to evaluate and unravel the facts about the incident. The move underscores the NAF’s dedication to professionalism and accountability, as well as its respect for human life and well-being.
During the meeting, Air Vice Marshal Gabkwet emphasized the NAF’s unwavering commitment to adhering to international standards and conducting thorough, objective investigations into incidents involving civilian casualties. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Lawal for his hospitality and support, despite the short notice.
The Governor, in turn, reaffirmed his support for the military, particularly the NAF, in their ongoing operations against banditry in the state and the entire North West zone, acknowledging the complexities of military engagements and the unfortunate possibility of collateral damage.
Governor Lawal’s confidence in the NAF’s professionalism is not surprising, given his administration’s efforts to address the security challenges facing Zamfara State.
Last year, Governor Lawal had inaugurated a Security Trust Fund to mobilize resources and support the government’s efforts in tackling insecurity. This initiative demonstrates his commitment to finding solutions to the persistent security challenges in the state.
The NAF fact-finding team’s mission in Zamfara is a crucial step towards enhancing the Air Force’s capacity for protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the course of their operations. By conducting a thorough and objective investigation, the team aims to gather vital data and information that will inform subsequent actions and improve the NAF’s operational procedures.
