The Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended the Nigerian Army for their tireless efforts in combating terrorism and securing the state.
The commendation came during the 2024 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration, held at the Maimalari cantonment, where the Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division Nigerian Army gathered to mark the end of the year.
Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Yake Jingina, 7 Division’s Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations in a statement on Sunday said the Governor, represented by the Head of Service Borno State, Barrister Malam Fannami, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the military.
He acknowledged the progress made in the fight against insurgency, while also recognizing that the battle is far from over.
According to Governor Zulum, the Nigerian Army’s commitment and dedication have led to the decimation of hundreds of insurgents, with a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures resulting in the surrender of thousands of repentant Boko Haram adherents.
He ,however, acknowledged the sacrifices made by some troops in the discharge of their duties.
“ The commitment and dedication of our troops has (have) ed to the decimation of hundreds of insurgents, while a defy combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures have led to the surrender of thousands of repentant Boko Haram adherents.
“But it has not been all rosy , as some troops have had to pay the supreme price in the discharge of their duties.“
In his welcome address, the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI (JTF NE OPHK), Major General Waidi Shaibu, emphasized the importance of WASA as an opportunity for soldiers to reconnect with their traditions and cultures, highlighting the traditional rituals, including the burning of impetus, dancing, and exposure of masquerades, which are synonymous with the culture and traditions of Nigerian soldiers.
He traced the the root of WASA to the African Frontier Force during World War II, noting it has evolved over the years to become an integral part of the Nigerian Army’s social calendar, celebrating cultural heritage and providing a platform for soldiers to reconnect with their roots.
General Shaibu expressed gratitude for the Nigerian Army’s successes in combating insurgency and terrorism, noting that the event served as both a celebration and a moment to reflect on the year’s achievements and challenges.
Also speaking, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division NA, Major General AGL Haruna, also thanked the President, Governor of Borno State, and other dignitaries for their support, acknowledging the efforts of the organizing committee, cultural groups, and caterers in making the occasion enjoyable and sumptuous.
The highlight of the event was the display of traditional dances by the ‘Zage’ cultural dancers and other cultural groups, showcasing the rich diversity of Nigeria’s ethnic groups.
Enugu Reporters gathered that those who attended enjoyed a variety of performances, including the lighting of the bonfire, tug-of-war displays, and the beating of the retreat, which are integral to the cultural practices of the army.
The occasion was attended by key figures, including the Governor of Borno State, represented by the Head of Service, and other senior military officers, as well as representatives of the Shehu of Borno and members of the State Executive Council.
