The United Kingdom (UK) has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency in the North East zone of the country.
The UK Minister of State for Defence,Lord Vernon Coaker, stated this yesterday when he visited the Headquarters Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri, Borno State.
During his historic visit, Lord Coaker acknowledged the strong mutual respect and relationship between the two nations.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations Headquarters Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI said Coaker highlighted the shared values of respect for the rule of law, democracy, and human rights, of both countries, which serve as the foundation for their cooperation.
Lord Coaker commended Nigeria’s progress in tackling terrorism in the North East region, particularly through Operation HADIN KAI, and expressed the UK’s pleasure in providing additional training support through the British Military Advisory Training Team.
This move is expected to further enhance the capabilities of Nigerian troops in handling evolving security challenges.
In his remarks, the Theatre Commander OPHK, Major General Waidi Shaibu, appreciated the UK’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts and training initiatives, which have been instrumental in boosting the troops’ knowledge and skills.
He noted that the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK, spanning decades, has been beneficial to both countries.
Major General Shaibu conveyed his sincere appreciation to the UK Government for their generous donation of Counter Improvised Explosive Device equipment to the Theatre, as well as their collaboration in supporting OPHK to achieve its mandate.
The visit has further strengthened the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the UK in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East region.
Enugu Reporters acknowledged that the development is a testament to the UK’s unwavering commitment to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
According to the report, with the UK’s continued support, Nigeria is poised to make significant strides in its fight against insurgency, and the people of the North East region can look forward to a more secure and stable future.
