In a significant development in the ongoing fight against terrorism in Nigeria, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully conducted a clearance operation in the notorious Timbuktu Triangle, a known terrorist stronghold in the North East region.
Major General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations said the operation, which commenced on January 16, 2025, has resulted in the elimination of over 70 terrorist combatants, including three notable commanders; TALHA, the Terrorist Special Forces Commander, Mallam UMAR, the Terrorist Operations Commander, and ABU YAZEED, the Terrorist Brigade Commander.
According to reports, the troops encountered several terrorist attempts to ward off their advance, including the deployment of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (suicide bombers), and Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (suicide bombers in explosive vehicles).
However, the troops, already familiar with the terrorist tactics, were able to thwart these attempts, including shooting down amateur drones used by the terrorists.
Sadly, the Director said the operation has also resulted in the loss of 22 troops, with several others wounded in action.
He urged the media to resist publishing the names of the troop casualties to allow for formal notification of their next-of-kins.
He explained that the operation is ongoing, and the public will be updated on further developments in due course.
Enugu Reporters noted that this significant development is a major blow to the terrorist groups operating in the region and a testament to the bravery and determination of the Nigerian troops.
