In a significant boost to national security, the Rivers State Government has donated an AgustaWestland (AW) 139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
The Deputy Director Public Relations and Information NAF, Group Captain Kabiru Ali stated this on Wednesday noted that this donation aims to enhance the NAF’s capacity to protect critical national infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, while handing over the helicopter at the NAF Base in Port Harcourt, emphasised the state government’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s initiatives in bolstering national security.
He praised the NAF’s efforts in combating security threats, particularly illegal oil bunkering, and ensuring stability in the region.
He associated the recent increase in crude oil production being experienced by Nigeria to enhanced operational capabilities of all security agencies in the ongoing operations and urged them to sustain it.
Responding, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the longstanding partnership between the NAF and Rivers State.
He highlighted the AW139’s advanced features, including its high-speed capabilities and versatility, which will enhance the NAF’s rapid response missions.
According to the CAS, Air Force has begun training pilots, engineers, and technicians to ensure the helicopter’s effective deployment.
He noted that efforts are also underway to strengthen maintenance infrastructure, ensuring the helicopter’s long-term operational efficiency.
The CAS said this donation is part of the state government’s efforts to support the NAF and other security agencies in protecting lives, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and sustaining economic stability.
The NAF has also deployed newly acquired T-129 ATAK helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and other advanced surveillance and strike platforms to bolster security operations.
Enugu Reporters gathered that with this donation, Nigerians can expect enhanced security and a safer environment for economic activities to thrive.
