The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa has revealed that the strategic collaboration between Nigeria and Pakistan has led to the training of over 2,000 Nigerian officers in various Pakistani military institutions.
The CDS disclosed this significant milestone during a visit by the Pakistani Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Shahir Shamsad Mirza, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the statement made by the Director Defence Information Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS emphasised the importance of the partnership between the two countries, highlighting the areas of training, particularly Special Forces Training, management of Veteran Affairs, border security, and intelligence sharing.
He noted that the cooperation has not only enhanced the capacity of the Nigerian military but also fostered a stronger relationship between the two nations.
He said the Nigerian officers have received training in specialised areas, enhancing their capabilities in counter-terrorism and insurgency operations. The partnership has also focused on the management of veteran affairs, ensuring that the experiences and expertise of retired military personnel are leveraged for the benefit of both countries.
General Musa thanked the Pakistani Defence Chief for the strategic visit and assured that the Nigerian Military would continue to build on the existing collaboration for the benefit of all.
In his remarks, General Shamsad Mirza commended the Nigerian military for their efforts in combating terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of insecurity.
He acknowledged the long-standing mutual relationship between Nigeria and Pakistan, highlighting the shared cultural, religious, and diversity similarities between the two nations.
General Mirza described Nigeria as a prominent leader in Africa, with a significant geo-strategic importance to Pakistan.
He noted that both countries share similar experiences in fighting terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of insecurity, making their partnership a valuable asset in addressing these challenges.
He expressed interest in strengthening the partnership with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria.
