In a grand gesture of respect and admiration, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has honoured the legacy of its former Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar (Retired), by naming a state-of-the-art Trauma Centre in his honour.
This milestone event took place on May 13, 2025, as the NAF marked its 61st anniversary with a series of commissioning ceremonies for critical infrastructure projects at its base in Kano.
In a statement issued by the Director Public Relations and Information NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed the projects commissioned include a state-of-the-art Trauma Centre, an Eye Centre, two blocks of Officers’ Accommodation, and a newly constructed Office Complex for the Military Airport Commandant.
He noted that the commissioning ceremony, attended by top dignitaries, underscores the NAF’s commitment to the welfare, operational readiness, and professional excellence of its personnel.
The CAS, while naming the Trauma Centre in honour of the former CAS, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar (Retired), said the development was in recognition of his contributions to the NAF.
“This life-saving facility stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the contributions of our heroes.
“It is a reminder that their service continues to inspire future generations to serve with courage, honour, and commitment.” He stated.
The CAS highlighted the strategic importance of the trauma and Eye Centres, which aim to provide rapid and quality health care for wounded personnel, armed forces members, and surrounding communities. “The Eye Centre, in particular, addresses the growing need for preventive and curative eye care, with the goal of reducing avoidable vision impairment among NAF personnel,” he added.
Similarly , at the another facility, the CAS stated that the newly completed blocks of Officers’ Accommodation are expected to significantly improve the living standards of NAF personnel in Kano, while the Military Airport Commandant’s Office Complex will enhance coordination of air defence, airport security, and VIP protocols at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
“These projects are part of a broader strategy to transform the Nigerian Air Force into a modern, agile, and resilient force capable of meeting the airpower demands of Nigeria’s national security objectives in all operational environments,” Air Marshal Abubakar said.
The CAS expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support, which has enabled the NAF to make significant progress.
He also appreciated the Honourable Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, the Kano State Government, traditional institutions, and host communities for their cooperation and support.
The CAS charged NAF personnel to “take ownership of these facilities. Use them responsibly. Let us remain steadfast in upholding our values, integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.”
Enugu Reporters noted that the commissioning of these facilities marks a significant step in the NAF’s efforts to enhance its capabilities and provide better services to its personnel and the community.
Enugu Reporters earlier reported that the CAS had on Wednesday commissioned some state-of-the-art facilities at its 213 Forward Operating Base in Katsina, Katsina State.
The projects include two accommodation blocks and a dedicated worship centre for the military Christian personnel.
