The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has extended condolences to the families of two vigilantes who lost their lives in a precise air interdiction operation conducted on May 31, 2025, in Maraya Village, Zamfara State.
According to the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General M Kangye in a statement said the operation successfully eliminated 20 terrorists but regrettably resulted in the unintended deaths of the two vigilantes, with two others injured.
He said the air strike was part of a continued effort to combat terrorism effectively in the region.
“Subsequent to the airstrike conducted at about 01:11 am on June 1, 2025, troops of 1 Brigade stationed at Forward Operation Base Magami were swiftly deployed to the Maraya/Wabi vicinity in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara state.
“Their primary objective was to conduct a comprehensive battle damage assessment of the airstrike and execute a thorough exploitation to gather crucial intelligence.” He stated.
According to the statement, the military has acknowledged the regrettable incident and is committed to fostering stronger collaboration with local security entities to prevent similar mishaps in the future.
The CDS wishes a speedy recovery to the two injured personnel. The military operation confirmed 20 terrorists were killed, and efforts are being made to prevent future unintended consequences.
