The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken significant strides in enhancing its operational capabilities through a strategic partnership with the United States.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
He noted that the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, led a high-level delegation to the US for a Programme Management Review Meeting on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.
During the meeting held in San Diego, California, from June 9-13, 2025, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed gratitude to the US Government for its enduring partnership with Nigeria. “We are deeply grateful to the United States Government for its enduring strategic partnership with Nigeria,” he stated.
The CAS emphasised that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters will significantly enhance the NAF’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.
The CAS reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to expediting the procurement process, stating, “We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process.”
Following the programme review, the CAS visited the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39) at Camp Pendleton, California.
During the visit, he inspected the AH-1Z helicopters and engaged with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps on best practices for operation, sustainment, and logistics support.
Air Marshal Abubakar emphasised the NAF’s commitment to the effective and responsible deployment of all acquired air assets in the fight against terrorism and other security threats. “Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he stressed.
The CAS extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support and strategic guidance. “The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” he said.
Enugu Reporters noted that the NAF’s efforts to enhance its operational capabilities demonstrate its commitment to protecting the nation and promoting regional stability.
