In a devastating turn of events, five troops of Operation UDO KA were killed in action during a surprise attack by a proscribed terrorists group known as Indigenous People of Biafra and their arm wing Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State.
According to a statement by Major General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations, the troops were deployed to maintain peace and protect citizens in the area when they were ambushed by the terrorists, who arrived in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and surrounding buildings.
In response to the attack, the military has vowed to retaliate with “overwhelming military pressure” to ensure the total defeat of the IPOB/ESN terrorists. He vowed that retribution must be followed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
General Buba noted that the situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
According to the statement, the attack, which occurred on May 30, 2024, has been condemned by the military, who described the loss of each soldier as a “terrible loss.”
The Director noted an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The military has reiterated the importance of public support in winning the war against terrorism, stating that the “lifeline of the terrorist is the people.” The statement accused the IPOB/ESN group for capitalizing on this to perpetrate attacks on troops.
“Overall, it must be reiterated that the lifeline of the terrorist is the people and this situation is no exemption. Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. The IPOB capitalised on this to perpetrate attacks on the troops. The situation leaves more to be desired.
“Accordingly, it is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops. The military would be fierce in its response. We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat.” the statement added
