The Nigerian Army (NA) has made history by promoting Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh to the substantive rank of Lieutenant, in recognition of her exceptional service and trailblazing achievements.
According to a statement released by the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) on Wednesday, the promotion was announced by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. The decoration ceremony took place at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club on June 26, 2024.
The NDA Commandant, Major General John Ochai, during the decoration ceremony praised Lieutenant Owowoh’s outstanding record of excellence as a cadet, which earned her the distinction of becoming the first female Nigerian officer to be trained at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, academic and non-academic staff, and family members. This promotion is a testament to the Nigerian Army’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence.
Lieutenant Owowoh, 24, made headlines in April when she became the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Enugu Reporters noted. Her promotion is a milestone in the history of the Nigerian Army, inspiring future generations of female officers.
