The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to safeguarding the well-being of every child in the country. Speaking at the Safe School Programme Workshop on August 22, 2024, at the Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya Hall, Army Officers’ Mess and Suites, Sokoto, the CDS emphasized the AFN’s dedication to ensuring a secure learning environment for all.
Represented by Major General Victor Onumajuru, Chief of Defence Training and Operations, the CDS highlighted the workshop’s significance in sensitizing troops and stakeholders on the need for increased commitment to the Safe School initiative. The event’s theme, “Providing a Secure and Safe Learning Environment for the Advancement of National Development,” aligns with the Federal Government’s plan to collaborate with security agencies and civil societies for school safety.
The workshop featured goodwill messages from the CDS and Coordinator of the Safe School Programme, Hajiya Halima Iliya, as well as insightful lectures and interactive sessions. Participants included representatives from the AFN, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Vigilante Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Department of State Service, education stakeholders, religious and traditional leaders, and resource persons.
In his welcome address, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Joint Task Force North West, Operation HADARIN DAJI, emphasized the importance of collaboration in securing schools nationwide. Special Guest of Honour, Colonel Ahmed Abdul Usman (Rtd), stressed the need for a comprehensive framework addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of children, highlighting the critical role of community engagement and trust-building.
The event showcased the AFN’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s children and ensuring a safe learning environment, with the presentation of power bikes and communication equipment in support of the initiative.
