A Nigerian Police Inspector has been arrested for suspected collaboration with Boko Haram/ISWAP/JAS terrorists, according to the Weekly Report of Ongoing Military Operations by the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Major General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations revealed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, noting that the operations covered the period of one week. The inspector’s name was, however, withheld in the report.
The inspector was apprehended on September 30, 2024, during a fighting patrol in MMC Local Government Area, Borno State.
During the preliminary investigation, the suspect was identified as a Nigerian Police Inspector, raising concerns about potential infiltration and collusion within the security forces.
“On 30 September 2024, troops, while on fighting patrol, intercepted and arrested one suspected violent extremist and recovered 35 rounds of 7. 62mm special ammo concealed in a shock inside a bag in MMC LGA of Borno State.
“During the preliminary investigation, suspect was identified as a Nigerian Police Inspector, ” General Buba disclosed.
The arrest underscores the ongoing efforts of the military and law enforcement agencies to root out terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria.
The joint task forces, including Operation HADIN KAI, Operation SAFE HAVEN, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Operation HADARIN DAJI, Operation WHIRL PUNCH, Operation DELTA SAFE, and Operation UDO KA, have recorded significant successes in combating terrorism and insurgency.
Major General Edward Buba, Director, Defence Media Operations, confirmed the arrest and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among security agencies to prevent and counter terrorism.
The incident serves as a reminder of the need for internal scrutiny and cleansing within the security forces to prevent compromised elements from undermining national security efforts.
General Buba further said troops have achieved significant successes in their ongoing operations across the country within the period.
“During the week under review, troops neutralized 165 and arrested 238 persons. Troops also arrested 35 perpetrators of oil theft and rescued 188 kidnapped hostages.
“In the SS (South South) troops denied the oil theft of the estimated sum of six hundred and eighty eight million one hundred and twenty five thousand one hundred and fifty naira (688,125,150.00),” he stated.
