The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a giant leap forward in enhancing its combat power, under the visionary leadership of Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

, NAF, said a technical team led by the CAS recently visited Italy to finalize arrangements for the acquisition of 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack jets and 10 additional AW-109 Trekker helicopters.
During the visit, the CAS engaged with top executives at Leonardo Headquarters in Rome, fostering a long-term partnership between the NAF and the company. He also inspected the first batch of six M-346 jets, with three nearing completion, and evaluated key support systems to boost the NAF’s operational readiness.
According to the statement, the delivery schedule is impressive, with the first three M-346 aircraft expected to arrive in Nigeria by early 2025, followed by subsequent deliveries until mid-2026.
The additional 10 AW-109 helicopters are slated to arrive by early 2026, adding to the two already procured by the NAF ¹.
To ensure seamless project implementation, the CAS recommended establishing a Programme Management Office. He also emphasized the need for a maintenance hub in Nigeria to provide long-term support for the M-346 fleet.
The M-346 jets will significantly enhance Nigeria’s air combat capabilities, with advanced features showcasing air-to-air and air-to-ground mission capabilities.
The AW-109 helicopters will bolster combat support roles, including Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift, and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC), among others.
This acquisition aligns with the CAS Command Philosophy, aimed at transforming the NAF into a more agile, resilient, and operationally effective force.
