The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that a video circulating on social media, purportedly showing footage of the recent attack on troops in Marte, Borno State, is fake.
The rebuttal is contained in a statement issued by the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye on Thursday, noted that the video, which was first posted on December 7, 2020, has been deliberately recycled and manipulated by terrorist sympathisers to mislead the public and sow fear.
According to the statement, the video is unrelated to the Marte incident, which occurred on May 12, 2025.
The AFN condemned the dissemination of fake content, warning that those behind such disinformation campaigns will be identified and held accountable.
“This act of misinformation is not only malicious but also had a failed attempt to demoralise our gallant troops and undermine the confidence of Nigerians in the Armed Forces,” the statement read.
Major General Kangye reiterated that the Nigerian military remains committed to defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The statement urges the public to disregard the fake video and rely only on official sources for verified information on military operations.
