The Nigerian Army (NA) has responded to allegations of neglect and misconduct in the handling of death benefits for widows of fallen soldiers, describing the claims as “disturbing” and calling for concrete evidence to support the allegations.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director Army Public Relations, in a statement on Sunday,said “The Nigerian Army recognizes the emotional and socioeconomic challenges faced by the families whenever their breadwinners pass on.”
She however, noted that the Army asserts that it has “institutionalised a robust welfare system that provides death benefits to the next-of-kin of deceased personnel.”
The statement further enumerated some welfare systems including benefits such as gratuity, burial expenses, financial support, insurance schemes, and scholarships for children.
The statement emphasised the NA’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “Anyone with credible evidence is strongly encouraged to report such misconduct through established complaint mechanisms to enable prompt disciplinary action.”
She further reiterated the Nigerian Army’s dedication to supporting the welfare of its personnel and their families, both during service and after death, saying, “The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in supporting the welfare of its personnel and their families.”
