The Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar ,has emphasised that national security is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of all citizens, not just the military.
In his keynote address during the Media Parley with the Media executives organised to mark the two eventful years of the people centric leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa and other Service Chiefs in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister highlighted the importance of transparency, collaboration, and strategic communication in securing the nation.
The Special Guest of Honour, who was
ably represented by his Special Adviser (Technical), Major General Ahmed Tijani Jibrin (retrd), commended the role of the media in shaping public perception and maintaining morale between the military and citizens.
“The media is a veritable backbone of the nation and a vital bridge between the government and the public. “Your responsibility in ensuring accurate, timely, and constructive reportage is crucial.” He said.
Alhaji Abubakar emphasised the need for balanced reportage and professionalism in media coverage of national security issues. “With the responsibility comes the need for balanced reportage and professionalism as well as commitment to the national interest above all,” he said.
He acknowledged the progress being made in tackling security threats, despite negative narratives in some quarters. “Despite negative narratives in some quarters, there is tangible evidence that we are turning the tide against the insurgents, the bandits, and other criminal elements,” he stated.
The Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military, media, and stakeholders in achieving national security. “The national security is a multidimensional undertaking that requires the influence of all segments of society, especially those with influence and voices,” he explained.
He commended the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs for their deliberate, focused, and tireless effort in tackling security threats. “The leadership of the Armed Forces has been both strategic and pragmatic, demonstrating clarity of vision and firm resolve,” he said.
He urged them to redouble their efforts to ensuring every part of Nigeria is safe.
